Whether you purchase a $20,000 Rolex or a $200 Citizen, you want your watch to last. But when the average timepiece ticks 28,800 times an hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all while being exposed to heat, shock, and water, you might wonder how this is possible.

Your typical self-winding mechanical watch sports between 75 and 150 parts. With this many pieces to keep working, it’s easy to see why your watch needs to be oiled and have the seals replaced about every five years and have those same seals checked every two years. So what do you do? Take it to Charlie’s Bait, Tackle, and Jewelry Repair around the corner …. umm, I’m guessing your answer here should be No.

When you take your watch in for maintenance, make sure the watchmaker has more than five years experience, and then ask him to tell you what’s going to be done. He (or she) should give you a rundown something like this:

1. He will remove the movement from the watch case. After removing the dial and hands, along with any other parts that don’t belong in the cleaning machine, he will pre-clean the movement while still assembled.
2. He will disassemble the movement and check all pieces for wear. Parts with too much wear or damage will be replaced.
3. He will put all the disassembled parts back into the cleaning machine for a more thorough cleaning.
4. He will reassemble the movement, and the watch, lubricating all parts as he goes.
5. Once the watch is mostly assembled, he will check it on a calibrating machine, recalibrating as necessary.
6. He will refurbish the case and bracelet, if you desire, before the watch is put back together.
7. He will install new seals and check the watch for water resistance.
8. He will observe the watch for several days to make sure it is functioning properly.
